  • Your phone is a map of the world’s resources. Its glass needs sand, its battery needs lithium and cobalt, its circuits need copper and gold, its plastic needs petroleum, mined on several continents and assembled in one place. A single device depends on the uneven distribution of resources and the trade that links them.
  • “Free” electricity is never really free. Punjab’s water crisis grew partly because cheap power made over-pumping painless to farmers. Prices and policies quietly shape how fast a resource is used.
  • Cities pay Nature to clean their water. Some cities protect the forests around their reservoirs rather than build treatment plants, because the ecosystem service is cheaper than the machine.
  • The 3 Rs in your school bag. A refilled water bottle, a reused notebook cover, recycled-paper sheets, sustainability is made of small, repeatable choices.

Common Exam Mistakes

  • Saying renewable resources “can never run out.” They can, if used faster than they renew.
  • Calling coal and petroleum abiotic. They are biotic in origin (formed from ancient living matter), even though they are mined like minerals.
  • Confusing distribution (where resources are found) with production (how much is taken out). A region can be resource-rich yet resource-poor in benefits.
  • Treating ecosystem services as “extra” or “optional.” They are free but essential, and very costly to replace.
  • Defining sustainability as “using fewer resources” only. It is about balance, meeting needs and protecting the future, not simply doing without.

  10. The condition that fails is economic feasibility. The gold is technologically reachable and legally acceptable, but extracting it from seawater costs far more than the gold is worth, so it does not “become” a resource.
