1.4 Ecosystem Services

So far we have treated resources as things, water, wood, minerals. But Nature also does work for us, quietly and without a bill. Bees pollinate crops, wetlands clean dirty water, forests soak up carbon and cool the air. These free benefits that healthy natural systems provide are called ecosystem services, and we usually notice them only when they fail.

What Is an Ecosystem Service? An ecosystem is a community of living things (plants, animals, microbes) interacting with their non-living surroundings (air, water, soil). An ecosystem service is any benefit that humans get from such a system working as it should, food, clean water, fresh air, fertile soil, a stable climate.

Three services to know well

The NCERT chapter highlights three vivid examples.

1. Pollination Bees, butterflies, birds and other creatures carry pollen from flower to flower, allowing plants to make fruit and seeds. A very large share of the world’s food crops depends on this free service. If pollinators vanished, harvests of fruits, vegetables and many other crops would collapse, and there is no cheap machine that can replace a billion bees.

2. Water purification Wetlands, forests and healthy soils act like a natural filter. As water moves through them, sediment settles, plants and microbes absorb pollutants, and what comes out the other side is cleaner. A marsh can do, for free, the job that an expensive treatment plant does for money.

3. Climate regulation Plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. Forests and oceans store huge amounts of carbon, helping keep the Earth’s temperature steady. Trees also cool the air and bring rain. When we clear forests, we lose this temperature-control service, and the climate grows harsher.

The four families of ecosystem services

Scientists group ecosystem services into four broad families. It is worth knowing the pattern.

Think About It A single tree in your neighbourhood gives shade (regulating), fruit (provisioning), oxygen (supporting) and a pleasant place to sit (cultural). If someone offered to cut it down for a small payment, how would you describe everything that would actually be lost?

Why these services are easy to ignore, and dangerous to lose

Ecosystem services are invisible on a price tag. Nobody sends a bill for the pollination of a mango tree or the cleaning of river water by a marsh. Because they are free, we tend to forget them, and we damage the systems that provide them, draining wetlands, clearing forests, paving over soil.

The trouble is that replacing a lost ecosystem service is usually far more expensive than protecting it, and sometimes impossible. A city that destroys the forest protecting its water supply may have to build a costly treatment plant in its place. Protecting Nature, it turns out, is often the cheapest engineering of all.

We have now seen both the stuff Nature gives and the services it performs. The final question of the chapter is the most urgent: are we using all of this wisely enough to leave something for the future? That is the subject of sustainable use.
